Priorities

Posted by nathan on 17 Jun 2008 | Tagged as: New Hope stuff., Tech Stuff., my life., random.

As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, I recently launched a new NewHope.in website.
It has been a lot of work, but it’s been all worth it.

One of the reasons it’s been a lot of work is that I have placed an extreme importance on valid page code. This means, my desire is to have the NewHope.in website 100% standards-compliant.
This is not always (ever) an easy thing to do, but for someone who is blind, this is imperative.

Target got sued by a blind person because the blind person can’t use their site. (Just look at the validation report!). Check out NewHope.in’s validation report.

I’ve found that most companies–even web companies who produce products for the web really don’t care much about validation. NewHope.in completely validates, except for our calendar integration, which we have no control over the code. I’m still deciding what to do with this. There are work-arounds, just not easy ones, but perhaps some day…

So why is this important?
Do you think spending extra time on valid code is important, or does it not really matter?

This Week’s Poll: Hillary Clinton–>Dropping Out?

Posted by nathan on 09 May 2008 | Tagged as: polls, random.

This week’s poll question is of political nature (I am an elected official, so it’s only natural!).
So when do you think Hillary Clinton will drop out of her bid to win the Democratic nomination? This poll closes the evening of May 13, so vote soon!

My Brother’s Blog

My brother Adam is Worship Arts Pastor here at New Hope.

He blogs like I do.

Only, I don’t accept advertising, he does. Here’s a screenshot of the advertisement I found at the bottom on his site today:

I thought that was absolutely hilarious! After I showed him this ad, he stated he was going to remove all ads from his blog.
What a riot!

Obama v. Clinton

Posted by nathan on 28 Mar 2008 | Tagged as: random.

Mrs. Clinton has all but already lost the Democratic nomination (unless the Super Delegates decide to change the people’s vote), so why is she still fighting?

A recent poll showed Clinton and Obama’s continued fight is severing the Democratic Party. Is this good for the dems?

And here in NE Indiana, Clinton will be here sometime today and President Clinton was in Fort Wayne a week ago, and Obama has been nowhere to be seen. What’s up with that?

What’s your thoughts on the Democratic bout for the nomination?

Is it time for Clinton to just bow out gracefully, or should she go down fighting to show she’s one tough cookie?

Backup Sump Pump

Posted by nathan on 17 Mar 2008 | Tagged as: my life., random.

Watchdog BatteryLast week, I installed a battery backup sump pump. This pump will go off only when the power is off (meaning, the normal sump pump won’t be pumping).
In doing this, I noticed my other sump pump pit (ejecting washer machine water) isn’t working, and it is overflowing (via an overflow pipe)into the sump pump. So I need to replace the other pump, too.

This battery sump pump was the first step to finishing our basement. We weren’t going to invest in finishing if there was a chance of a basement flood (I’ve had two basement floods since I’ve been there–both due to electrical outage (and of course, I have NIPSCO power, so not only do I have really frequent outages, but it takes forever to fix–and on top of it all, I also pay incredibly high rates–about twice that of Auburn Electric.)

Next project up: washing machine sump pump. Then, either stair treads or windows, not sure which we’ll do first.

Ryan Frisinger Concert

Posted by nathan on 17 Mar 2008 | Tagged as: random.

Last weekend, Emily and I went to Fort Wayne to see Ryan Frisinger in concert. Frisinger is a local musician and worship leader from the Angola area (I think perhaps Fremont?), and the experience was wonderful.

IRyan Frisinger enjoyed his worshipful attitude and his willingness to just sit there and play worship music.

Perhaps most enjoyable of all, Frisinger used his influence to encourage people (peers) who were perhaps not following Jesus very closely to renew their commitment and get back in line with his will for their lives.

I appreciate Frisinger’s willingness to speak the truth, to say it like it is, and to follow the Holy Spirit’s promptings in a general direction of the concert.

This was my first Frisinger concert, although I am pretty sure it will not be my last. If you ever hear of Frisinger playing in your area, I encourage you to check him out. (I heard a rumor he’ll be appearing on Carson Daly soon, too!)

Josh Doyle Releases Free Album

Josh Doyle
My brother-in-law, Josh Doyle, (former front-man for Dum Dums), has released an EP (kinda like a mini-album) for free download.

In classic Seth Godin fashion, Doyle releases these viral beats for free. You don’t want to miss out on downloading this free music. Keep an eye on him as he releases a new album soon…

Stinky Church Today.

Posted by nathan on 04 Mar 2008 | Tagged as: New Hope stuff., my life., random.

Yeah, it stinks at New Hope today. Physically stinks.

No, I don’t have bad gas.

We have an issue with our ejection pump, that when the wind blows from the east, it pushes the smell (poop mixed with pee mixed with toilet paper) up into the air. It’s pretty nasty.
So twice today, I have gone on Lysol duty to deodorize the culprit room. Here’s the low-down:
1. Grab a can of Lysol.
2. Stand outside the culprit closet.
3. Take a deep breathe.
4. Open door 2″, insert Lysol, spray for 30 seconds.
5. Close door, quickly run away.
6. Resume normal breathing pattern.
