I've realised I DON'T need the 80gb iPod, or the Palm PDA, I now don't rely on my phone for names and numbers. I used to be the smartphone/pda/connected everywhere kinda guy, however, I learned last year I don't NEED these things. Sure I have my PC, and that serves me well. I probably won't get rid of that, but ditching the TV was a great thing to do. Life is a lot clearer when you aren't worried about syncing devices, trying to update firmware, etc. I'm not against technology per se, it does some great stuff. But it's not the be all and end all. I'm a web dev. And I'm learning technology isn't "it". Two major things... 1) Cost vs. Effectiveness vs. Need. I just purchased an top of the line keyboard which is extremely recent technology. It was worth the massive money because personally I have a NEED for EFFECTIVENESS in that area. But I just can't get myself to spend money on a smartphone -- my need for that doesn't justify it. Money is huge. 2) Going with the "flow." ... I like to be "average" because then the tech worlds seems to go round and round. You've got to be compatible with the world around you. What influences? I'm not going to adapt to new technology that I have no connection with as fast as will to something that I'm involved with or interested in. Example: I'm pretty sure I'm never going to use the newest software for digital animation, but I'll clearly need the newest self-sustaining artificial heart when my old one gives out from curly fries.
