Nathan “Nate” Diehl

The local newspaper included this as part of their article on the Waterloo Town Council election on Wednesday:
The top three vote totals went to winners Nathan “Nate” Diehl with 136 votes, Albert “Al” Shuman with 127 and incumbent William “Bill” Hubartt with 119.
Notice how all three have a “Name”? Well, Al and Bill go by their shortened names–I do not. Sure, I answer to Nate, and there are a few people who always call me Nate, but not tons.
When I first saw that, I was like, ‘What the heck? Why did they call me “Nate”?’ And then I started trying to think of where they would have heard someone call me Nate.
And I couldn’t think of anyone!
Tuesday night I was at the Saddle Barn with the DeKalb County Republican party to watch the returns, and Jay Oberholzer (Chairman) called me ‘Nathan’ on multiple occasions. My wife always calls me Nathan. My parents both call me Nathan.
I can’t for the life of me figure out where they got I went by the name Nate.
I’m not mad, don’t get me wrong. I certainly do answer to Nate, and I’m not offended by it in the least. I think it is funny.
I like my name Nathan, and I would like to keep with it, if you don’t mind. I don’t think this disturbing occurrence it will continue. Waterloo’s normal beat writer, Katheryn, wasn’t on our story, it was the editor and another reporter, I think (the article actually didn’t have a byline). If Katheryn picks up this bad habit, I’ll be forced to ask her to call me by my given name.

I was flipping through the paper last night not really paying attention when I saw the picture. I was like, “Look, it’s Nathan!!” Then I got in trouble because Ayron was on the phone and I was yelling. Opps.

So when I ran for Clerk-Treasurer in Garrett a few years ago, the Journal Gazette called for an interview. Part of the conversation the person asked what I did for a living. I explained my most reason job and said that I was presently “staying at home with my child”. When the article came out, they listed my job as a “babysitter”!!! Most people that are at home with their OWN kids do not consider that a babysitting job! Also, when they asked me my age, I declined to answer. I was about 30 years younger than my opponent who was making an issue of her experience and my lack of it, so I did not want to add to that. In the article, the writer pointed out that I refused to answer the question of age, and that she did an internet search on me to obtain my age, and printed it anyway(I was 29!). There were other inaccuracies in the article that reflected on me, and I saw red when I had the paper in my hands. Most of my family called to complain and canceled their subscription to the paper in protest over this. Lesson? Do not always believe what you read in the paper, especially about people’s lives. They get it wrong a lot of the time, and they don’t care about the impact. I sound pretty cynical I know, but working in politics I saw this time and time again, and I think the average person, if they’ve never had their name and picture in the paper, puts too much faith in the accuracy of what they are reading. At least they spelled the rest of your name right!

Yes, the liberal Journal Gazette. Not so cool (unless you’re a democrat).
The News-Sentinel is much more balanced. And I’m not just saying that because my father in law is the editor.
If anyone is getting a Fort Wayne paper, I strongly suggest The News-Sentinel, not the Journal.

Tell them that Nathan is your nickname, short for Nathaniel! HA, not true, but might work!?
