Site Cracked (Hacked)
Posted by nathan on 02 Oct 2007 | Tagged as: Tech Stuff., my life.
Okay, get this…
Just moments ago, I was working on one of my websites, on some template customizations, when I notice the site is really, really slow. Like, crazy slow.
As I’m looking at the files I’m working with, I notice a file which was edited just minutes prior (literally). I was like, ‘What the heck? What is that?’ So I opened it up, and it says, ‘You’ve been hacked by…’
‘What!?’ I thought.
Franticly, I started closing things down as fast as I could. I didn’t get it closed down fast enough, though, and the site was defaced. Darn it, i thought to myself!
So presently, as I’m typing this, I’m waiting on files to finish uploading to the server. I hope that’s all that’s happened. I have some time ahead of me tonight to make sure this thing is tightened down…
Darn it all.
For what it’s worth, this is a site I’m working on that I did not initially set up. (I think they got in through a vulnerability left by the initial designer). Hopefully it’s just the little crack and nothing major…
UPDATE: The crack was due to a low-level exploit on another hosting account on the server, and had nothing to do with the CMS running this site.
that’s good news!
