He who thinketh he leadeth and has no one following him is only taking a walk.
-John Maxwell

true or not?
what about the opposite–He who thinks he’s only taking a walk and has everyone following him is leading.
is that true?

    Very true. On both counts.

There are some leaders, who by their example and lifestyle lead others, but are so humble they don’t realize they are doing it.

    Ditto Todd. Both are true.

Given the choice I would rather be the guy who thinks he’s taking a walk and doesn’t realize people are following him (provided, of course, that it is a God-honoring walk!).

What a legacy that would be to leave behind!

    an additional thought on this:

I think taking a walk just happens, and at some point, a humble leader realizes he has a bunch of followers. At that point, things change. He can develop his leadership skills, or he can even start to gloat about his large following.
But once the leader realizes he has a following, i don’t think it’s possible to just keep taking a walk.

I kind of wonder if we ever find ourselves in an environment where there’s not at least someone following on some level…

What I believe is that someone who is simply taking a walk and realizes that he is followed is not a leader until that moment.
He will then become a leader if he gains consciousness of this role and exerts this capacity to achieve a particular and high-profile goal.
Leadership is something related to capacity of hitting the target with the active and effective involvment of the rest of the group, whatever it is.
    Cheers
