Five things i’ve learned whilst renovating
Posted by nathan on 15 Mar 2007 | Tagged as: my life.
5. Make a list before you leave for Home Depot. Enough Said.
4. Having a mess in the kitchen is rather annoying. most of our kitchen is currently located in our living room. our baker’s rake is situated in our hallway. it’s annoying.
3. Even if you go to Home Depot and get everything on your list, you’ll probably have to go back again very soon. (Last night, i went to home depot to get a water line cap. Then when i got home, i started installing our new gas range. the incoming gas line was too large for the adapters i was told was a ‘Universal Kit’, so i had to go to Home Depot a second time to get a reducer (and while i was at it, i also added a shut-off valve to bring the install up to code). So once i got home from the second trip, i realized i should cap the water line before Emily got home–only to realize that the cap i purchased wouldn’t work, so i had to go back a third time to get the right cap. all is well now.

2. Renovating seems to preoccupy me, so i’m not working out as much any more.
1. Next time, buy a house closer to Home Depot.

Hahahaha. I’m laughing because we are in the same boat. Heck, even with two construction trucks full of things, I still made several trips to Home Depot during our “repainting” phase. Digging up the front yard to replace the broker sewer tile should bring several trips to The Depot into my future.

I think it’s fun! Each trip to Auburn to go to Home Depot is a potential Starbuck’s stop too! Although usually I’m not the one taking the trips because I’m stuck at work, but still! That’s my whole motivation…well, not really…

Being in an old house (about 90 years old) that is in constant renovation in one area or another, we make those repeated trips to Home Depot too. Thank God for the one in Auburn. My dad likes to remind me (since I wasn’t a home owner pre-Auburn Home Depot) that he used to have to go to Fort Wayne for each and every trip. It takes about 8 minutes to get to HD from Garrett, and I have to be thankful for such a short drive (since we might be back an hour later!)Seriously though, you are very fortunate to have the know-how and financial means to do renovation. I know so many people who would have to hire someone to do even minor work on their houses and they just have to live with it since they can’t afford that. Mike and I don’t know much but my dad knows how to do everything it seems, and we are so grateful to learn from him.
