RAX roast beef.

Do you remember Rax Roast Beef restaurant?

When i was a kid, there was a Rax in Auburn. Before Starbucks, there was Fazolli’s. Before Fazolli’s, there was Rax.
It had a cool bi-level eating area by having an elevated (instead of a lowered sunroom) eating area.

My wife and I have talked about Rax a few times lately, probably because when I was a kid, Rax was my favorite place to eat, and now I get to enjoyed going on dates with my wonderful wife to the same building.

I remember drinking out of an Uncle Alligator cup. it was a lot of fun.
Today, i enjoy the same building, but in a much different way–relaxing drinking coffee from a paper cup.

I think sometimes in our walk with God, the things we come in contact with are much the same way. Things change.
Sometimes seemingly important things change and we go all crazy, when in reality (the big picture) it wasn’t anything important at all.
Today, I wouldn’t like drinking my coffee from a plastic Uncle Alligator cup. Nor when i was a kid, would I have wanted to drink the fruit punch from a paper cup.

I loved the alligator cups and the elevated seating. That place was the best. You remember Rax, but do you remember Noble Romans? Watching them make your pizza was the coolest thing. Ah, the olden days.

I remember! Sometimes I would even get a chocolate chip cookie with my roast beef meal. And you say it’s a Starbucks?

I do remember Rax! That got me thinking about ‘changes’, and how many I’ve seen. That gets a bit scary! I remember when we had a store called “Grants” located where the dollar store is next to Kroger. Kroger wasn’t there and Grants was a larger store as they later divided it into two stores.

I also remember in high school when west of downtown Auburn, on 7th street, there were very few businesses. There was Dairy Queen, S & S Tire Co, and the Starlight Hotel (just demoloished)and that’s about all!

What changes might happen, in the next 20 years? It seems to me that many people come out when things change. Like the new Wal-Mart, everyone wants to check it out, or newly opened Starbucks. Why does the business community tear down the old Wal-Mart and build a new one? Maybe changes in the church bring people out too. People might want to see what’s new. (I’m not suggesting we tear down the old church, but keep things new and exciting.)

God never changes, but how we communicate Him does!

I started as a RAX employee 20 years ago this year. I had worked in the RAX in Auburn for a short period before transfered to the RAX on Coliseum Blvd. Ft. Wayne as the General Manager…that unit is now a Fazoli’s I believe. I Currently Own and Operate the Rax Restaurant (STILL OPEN) in Anderson. 1106 Main Street Downtown..Hours M-F 10A-7P, closed Weekends and Holidays. We no longer carry the Alligator Sipper Cups..although I have collected them with other old Rax Memorabilia to display in the Restaurant, But we still have the B.B.C., Chocolate-Chip Shakes and a great local following, however we have a lowered SunRoom and an elevated Deck (Tri-Level) Dining Room….if you get bored and want to make a road trip..you are welcome anytime. There still is 1 open just south of Duncansville,Pa. On bussiness rte 220. we ate there just over the weekend and enjoyed the food once again. The operator there told us that it would be closed at the end of May 2007 this month and open 2-3 months later as a backyard burger

I remember the one in Star City, WV near where the old k-mart used to be (before it closed down). I used to crave BBC (Beef Bacon and Cheddar) and almost always got a Chocolate Chip Milkshake. I wish they would open a new one. I had so many memories in that place.

I came across this entry when I was doing a Google search of Rax to prove to my Marylander husband that they actually existed! Coincidentally enough, we live in Auburn, too. I didn’t remember that Fazoli’s used to be a Rax — for some reason I thought it had been a Hardee’s. I seem to remember getting yummy Hardee’s fried chicken when I was a kid, visiting my mother in Auburn. Or maybe I’m mixing up my childhood memories? Auburn has changed so much since the late 80’s, that’s for sure.

    Marci,
    Thanks for stopping by!
I feel old now…hehe. There did use to be a Hardees in Auburn. It was on the southeast corner of Seventh Street and Grandstaff, in what is now a used car showroom at Ben Davis.

Very cool that you’re from Auburn, too. Thanks for dropping in and leaving a note!

Years ago there was a Rax in Overland Park, KS. We used to eat there all the time, the food was cheap and really good and they had an all-you-can-eat buffet that was off the hook! They usually had a guy dressed up in what appeared to be a foam alligator costume outside - we didn’t know that he was called “Uncle Alligator” (we thought he was a crocodile - this was the 80’s and Crocodile Dundee was big back then). Plus, he looked more like Gumby. We started calling him the “Gumbidile.” God I miss Rax…

I just ran into a Rax near West Liberty, OH - was on my way to the Ohio Caverns. Have to admit, I was incredulous at first - i asked the folks in the car… did that sign say “Rax”??? When I saw that it did, some nuerons of peace and tranquility fired off in my head - so I said, I know where we’re going to lunch! After the caverns, we went to the Rax. It has been so long since I have had my favorite sandwich, a BBC, that i order 2! I also had a banana-split milkshake that was too good to be real! Man, I miss Rax. I justt might have to make the 70 minute drive there again someday, soon!
