This happed a while ago, but for some reason, i just thought of it again.
I do CD duplications for our church, and a couple years ago, we bought our first CD duplicator.
So anyway, one day a woman comes up to me and says, ‘This CD wouldn’t play. Do you know why that is?’
‘Huh. No i don’t. Let me put it in my computer and see if it reads it.’ As i open up the drawer, i wonder, ‘what happened?’ So the drive attempts to read, and No Luck..the disk is damaged for whatever reason. So i ask, ‘where did you get this at?’
‘I found it in the trash last night.’
i smiled…yeah, that’s why they call it ‘trash’.

Oh my cow. Some people shouldn’t be allowed around technology unsupervised.

I remember working in an office once, and someone called in and wanted to talk to a coworker. The person was out of the office, so we told the caller she could leave a voicemail, and she said, “Oh, I can’t do that. I don’t have a computer!”

Boy could I tell you some stories…I talked to old people on the phone for over two years. You take for granted the knowledge we gain and the terminology we use when we use a computer. Try explaining the address bar to an 88 year old man. It doesn’t work. I tried…for 30 minutes. Or, how about explaining how to open the attachment to an e-mail that you just sent. You can’t use the word “icon” because it means nothing to a 77 year old woman who says she is going to have to wait until her grandson comes over so he can show her how to open the file. It’s funny, yet sad…but so true.

Yes Emily, I completely understand, I used to do computer troubleshooting over the phone with elderly people, and you’re right, there is no way to explain most of this stuff to some people. They have absolutely no frame of reference. Which, after you have calmed down a little, results in some pretty funny stories!
