communications

This past friday, I spent the day at a Communications Workshop hosted at Granger Community Church in Granger, Ind. (near South Bend). the workshop leader was Kem Meyer, GCC’s Communications Director, and the workshop really helped me organize my thoughts about communications here at New Hope.

Sure, a church ten times the size of New Hope does some things differently, and their methods will surely differ from ours. But the principles they employ are principles we should embrace. The methods may be different, but i think we could learn a whole load from the principles GCC has employed.

First, everything they do during the weekend services is focused on one person–their guest. the environment of the atrium. the check in stations. the auditorium. the platform. but in our context…the pre- and post-service slides, the weekly bulletin, the website. it is all geared toward the person who is a first time guest–who isn’t comfortable and who needs a little help feeling like they fit.

there are certain words that are off-limits in GCC’s culture, because it’s a word that isn’t used outside church circles. think about it–when is the last time you heard the word ‘pulpit’ outside of a church setting? how does a non-Christian relate when we’re using terms outside their vernacular? other no-no words in GCC are words such as work, fellowship, intimacy (they once promoted a men’s event as “Come get intimate with a bunch of men” — oops!)

In the next several weeks, I’ll be working on implementing structure and methods to how we do things. I will be assembling a team of awesome, talented people to work alongside me as part of our Communications Team. If you’re interested in helping me get things off the ground, let me know–I would love to get you looking through some of the materials I’m putting together before they are officially launched. Specifically, we will be looking for the following roles: Copy writer (one who writes copy), proof reader, web content editor, web administrator. If you would like any more information about any of these great opportunities, please contact me–eventually i’ll be contact you…
