lessons from flavored coffee, part ii.

Today will be the last morning of drinking the flavored coffee we bought last week. it was good run, but i’m ready to my french roast beans again.
The last week or so, every time I have drank the flavored coffee, I didn’t mind it as much as i did the day before. i guess i’m getting used to it. at first, it was really gross and i didn’t want to have anything to do with it, but now that i’ve been drinking it for a solid week, i actually do not mind it any more. my wife says she doesn’t mind it so much either.
i suggest that this trend is also very much like what could happen to us as we do life seeking God. as we take steps toward God, we learn to get deeper and deeper with him, which requires us to change habits and the way we do things. we develop a more ‘refined’ sense of being with God, much the same way you can refine your taste for coffee.
however, if we stop doing the things to stay deep with God, and revert back to our baby-Christian days, it’s gross at first–we long for a deeper relationship with God. Then–before we know it, BANG–we don’t mind acting like a baby-Christian, not spending time with God and not doing the things we really liked doing.
it is a choice we must make. will we seek after solid God, or want the watery stuff we used to love?
Milk is for beginners, inexperienced in God’s ways; solid food is for the mature, who have some practice in telling right from wrong. (Hebrews 5:14, msg)
i don’t want flavored coffee. i want the real stuff. it’s 7:48 in the morning, and i want real coffee. what do you want?

I’ve been drinking decaf latte for too long. I’ve recently tried “spiritual espresso” for the first time in a while.
Talk about “knock-you-on-your-butt” encounters. It’s harder to “drink”, but so much more satisfying.
